Making Your Custom Surgical Guides
- Using the data obtained from the MRI scan, plastic surgical guides are custom-made by OtisMed, the creator of custom fit total knee replacement technology. These surgical guides match the surface of the bone on the end of your femur and top of your tibia as it is currently in your arthritic knee.
- Surgical cutting slots are made in the guides that perfectly match where surgical cuts will be needed on the ends of the femur and tibia (as calculated in the computer model) in order to fit the knee implant properly in its new anatomic alignment.
- These custom surgical guides are labeled with the patient’s name, the name of the surgeon and hospital, and the sizes of both the femur and tibia. The guides are then sent to your surgeon to be used during your surgery. These cutting guides are very precisely made—to within several tenths of a millimeter. In fact, they match the end of the bone so well, that they can only be put in one place, assuring accuracy.
