About Dr. Vernace and His Work
Dr. Vernace was the second surgeon in the country to perform a custom fit total knee replacement and the first to do so with the Stryker Triathlon Knee system.
This new technique was developed by OtisMed, a California based company, in concert with an orthopaedic surgeon, Stephen M. Howell, M.D., of Sacramento, California. Dr. Howell was a fellow orthopaedic resident with Dr. Vernace at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Vernace became involved in this project in 2006, and became the first surgeon on the East Coast, and the second in the country to perform this procedure. Currently, there are only a few orthopaedic surgeons in the country involved in this new program.
There has been a great deal of interest from many other orthopaedists, and this technique will quickly become more widely available. Dr. Vernace is delighted to be involved from the beginning and Main Line Orthopaedics is pleased to be able to offer this revolutionary advancement to our community before almost anywhere else in the country. Dr. Vernace has been the principle surgeon in the refinement of this procedure with the Stryker Triathlon knee system and considers this new technique to be the single biggest advance in total knee replacement surgery in the last 25 years. Numerous surgeons from around the country visit Dr. Vernace at Bryn Mawr Hospital to observe this new technique.
Dr. Vernace received his initial training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Rothman Institute. He has been on staff at Bryn Mawr Hospital since 1988 and has performed more than 2500 hip and knee replacements. He is currently the co-director of the joint replacement program at Bryn Mawr and has received the national "Top Docs" award 6 years in a row and was recently named to the "Top Docs" list by Main Line Magazine.
Dr. Vernace has brought many firsts to the Philadelphia area and to Bryn Mawr Hospital:
- He was the first surgeon to perform total joint surgery as an outpatient procedure in early 1990.
- In addition to his success in joint replacement surgery, he brought arthroscopic, single incision anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery to Bryn Mawr.
- He was one of the earliest surgeons in Philadelphia and the first at Bryn Mawr to perform arthroscopic rotator cuff repair
Dr. Joseph Vernace now limits his practice to joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery of the knee, hip and shoulder.
